A View From the Bench: A Judge's Perspective on Expert Witness Testimony

Join other experts and attorneys in gaining insights in how judges evaluate experts’ testimony. Superior Court Judge Laura M. Reckart will present her perspective on how experts can effectively communicate facts and opinions to the court.


Laura M. Reckart is a Maricopa County Superior Court Judge currently assigned to the Family Court bench in Mesa, Arizona. Laura was appointed by Governor Ducey in May, 2015, but did not take the bench until November, 2015 due to a nine month long capital trial she needed to complete as the sole prosecutor on the matter. Her legal career began in 1989 when she joined the County Attorney’s office as a prosecutor in the general felony Trial Group. For the next ten years, Laura remained at MCAO Office moving to various Bureaus including Juvenile, Gang/ROP, Homicide and Sex Crimes (where she spent most of her ten years). In 1999, she became a Pro-Tem Judge for Municipal Courts and Maricopa County Superior Court. Laura returned to prosecution in 2000 as an Assistant Attorney General prosecuting Drug and Gang-related crimes (including the drug prosecution of Sammy “the Bull” Gravano) and where she also served as the Victim Services Director. Throughout her career, Laura tried dozens of varying felony cases, including capital and wiretap trials, in addition to overseeing and prosecuting a number of gang-related, emergency, murder and vice wiretap investigations. Laura earned a number of awards from various agencies including the FBI, DEA, AGACL, APAAC, MCAO, GITEM, Phoenix Police Department and the Arizona Attorney General’s Office. She has served on various Committees and presented on a variety of topics to prosecutors, lawyers, public interest groups and law enforcement agencies.
