Life and Death on San Diego Bay, an Accident Waiting to Happen, And it Did

Join San Diego chapter members, attorneys, and visitors for the presentation of a prominent case involving a tragic death in San Diego’s own Bay. This interactive presentation will include discussion of facts in the 2009 incident, expert assessment, expert skills employed, and a complex outcome. We will learn and discuss investigation techniques that can be applied to all disciplines.


Captain Tom Carney is an expert witness in marine incident cases.  His amazing career includes over 3,000 days at sea, operating more than 190 vessels in U.S. and foreign waters for the U.S. Coast Guard.  He is an active Captain in the U.S. Merchant Marine and he is a retired Captain in the U.S. Air Force. 


Yacht operation, MegaYacht and private luxury charters, commercial tugboats, purse seiners, push boats, sport fishing skipper, and trophy-winning racing skipper in San Diego Regattas - - Captain Carney has seen many countries, numerous celebrities, and has had many adventures in his active career. 


He has acted as a consultant or an expert witness in over 40 marine incident cases with claims up to $100,000,000.  He is currently involved in two major cases against the U.S. Federal Government. Captain Carney has been interviewed on national TV for MSNBC as a Marine Expert.  He also has appeared in the James Cameron movie “Ghosts of the Abyss”.
